Abstract

The ever increasing cost of oil and serious problems of environmental pollution have accelerated the development of non–polluting electric and hybrid electric vehicles during last two decades. The inherent limitations of battery operated electric vehicles have lead to the development of IC Engine assisted and/or multi–fueled hybrid electric vehicles. The new technology is likely to replace conventional IC Engine automobile technology soon. It is therefore appropriate at this time, to know more about developments in this new technology, discuss its advantages and limitations and decide appropriate technology for present and near future for the developing and developed countries. A Conference on Electric and Hybrid Electric Vehicles is therefore proposed at Pune (India), which is a major automobile manufacturing center in India.
Keywords: I) Electric Vehicles (EV)
State of the art.
Electric Drives and Control.
Battery Technology.
Fuel Cell Technology.
Ultra–capacitor Technology.
II) Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV)
State of the art.
Management of Multiple Energy Sources.
IC Engine Assisted Electric Vehicles.
Hydrogen Fueled Hybrid Electric Vehicles.
III) Mechanical Design of Electric and Hybrid Electric Vehicles
Transmission System Design (Brakes, Clutches, Gears, Steering etc)
Chassis and Body Design.
Safety Considerations.
IV) Testing and Evaluation of Electric and Hybrid Electric Vehicles
Performance, evaluation, testing and reliability of EV and HEV systems and components.
National and International standards used for testing of EV and HEV.
V) Electric and Hybrid Electric Vehicle Technology as an Alternative to Conventional Automobile Technology.
Environmental Considerations.
Efficiency, Cost and Economics.
Consumer Convenience and Acceptance.
Choice of Appropriate Technology for Developing and Developed Countries.
