The ever increasing cost of oil and serious problems of environmental pollution have accelerated the development of non–polluting electric and hybrid electric vehicles during last two decades. The inherent limitations of battery operated electric vehicles have lead to the development of IC Engine assisted and/or multi–fueled hybrid electric vehicles. The new technology is likely to replace conventional IC Engine automobile technology soon. It is therefore appropriate at this time, to know more about developments in this new technology, discuss its advantages and limitations and decide appropriate technology for present and near future for the developing and developed countries.
