Abstract

With the success of IEEE AFRICON 2004 in Botswana, the IEEE South Africa Section has partnered with the Polytechnic of Namibia to organise the hosting, in Windhoek, Namibia of the 8th IEEE AFRICON Conference. The hosting of this conference in Namibia has particular relevance: the Government’s vision 2030 has targeted Science and Technology as a priority and by 2030 envisages Namibia to be positioned side by side with the developed world in terms of technological output. Namibia’s history has culminated in a country with diverse language and culture, a country in which English, Oshivambo, Herero, Damara and German and several other languages are spoken by just two million inhabitants. It is the country in which John Moore’s desert drama, “Flight Of The Phoenix” was made. This film epitomises the use of engineering ingenuity and resourcefulness in the rescue of humankind, something desperately required in today’s world. Keywords: Communication and Signal Processing
Electron Devices and Circuits
Lasers and Electro–Optic Systems
Computational Methods and Applications
Antennas
Computational Semiotics
Energy and Power Systems
Engineering Management
Control and Automation
Modeling and Simulation
Power Electronics and Devices
Engineering Applications and Health
Education and Technology
Software Engineering
Information Systems
