In the last two decades of the 20th century, advances in software,
electronic, material, mechanical, control and structural engineering,
extensively enabled and defined the processes and products of the
Aerospace and Automotive industries, and of the associated
transportation, defense and space systems. As the new born century
begins its march into the future, both Society and end–users have
significantly increased their expectations of engineered systems such
as aircraft and automobiles, and the field of systems engineering is
witnessing a relentless growth to keep pace with these expectations.
Societies across the globe, for example, envision zero–fatalities, a
near–zero environmental footprint (e.g., zero green–house gas
emissions and zero non–renewal fuel consumption), and zero–
congestion. Individual end–users expect low ownership cost (routine
maintenance and upgrade), convenience with all the physical comforts
of a climate controlled, noise–free ambience with digital connectivity
& entertainment, all with no compromise on safety, performance or fuel–
efficiency.
