Introduction

The Coastal Altimetry Workshops aim at extending to the Coastal Zone the exceptional success satellite altimetry has had over the open ocean, the domain for which it was originally designed.
The first workshop, held in Silver Spring, U.S.A. in February 2008 (please see the <a href="http://www.coastalt.eu/pisaworkshop08/Smith_et_al_1st_CA_WS_E…; target="_blank">summary of the workshop and <a href="http://www.coastalt.eu/pisaworkshop08/supplementary–EOS…; target="_blank">supplementary material in pdf format) charted the course for achieving a greater improvement and promoting the use of satellite altimetry in the Coastal Zone.
The second Workshop, hosted in Pisa, November 2008 <a href="http://www.coastalt.eu/pisaworkshop08/Summary_of_2nd_Coastal_…; target="_blank">summary of the workshop and supplementary material in pdf format), represented a consolidation of the rapid progress made in the field, also thanks to projects such as COASTALT (funded by ESA) and PISTACH (funded by CNES).

Objectives & Expected Outcomes

This 3rd Coastal Altimetry Workshop is intended to review the latest advances in retrieving altimeter data in the Coastal Zone and to strengthen the links between the coastal altimetry community and the wider range of users, including scientists and those responsible for data integration. One expected outcome of the workshop will be to improve user awareness of progress made toward routine exploitation of coastal altimetry data.
Note that the 3rd Coastal Altimetry Workshop is held at the end of the week preceeding the OceanObs’09 conference in Venice, Italy (21–25 September) so you can conveniently attend both events (Venice is not far from Rome, and travel is possible by either train or airplane).
